Wanna have a listening adventure with me? Great! Answer these prompts:

How do you feel when you listen to this song?

I think anyone who has had their heart broken would understand that coping with shock and hurt is kind of the mood of the song. I also feel inspired to learn the piano chords.

Did you notice any lyrics during your first few listens of this song?

“Friends ask me how I feel/ And I lie convincingly/ ‘Cause I don’t want to reveal/ The fact that I’m suffering.”
I often think that the worst part of feeling hurt is the part where we feel as though we can’t talk about it. Maybe there are things we don’t want to face in ourselves. I thought these lyrics stuck out because they show how vulnerability in our society is also coupled with feelings of shame.

What colors or visual images does this song conjure in your imagination?

Ah, well. It’s Mariah Carey. It’s really difficult for me to listen to her without visualizing her with her costumes, and with spotlight and glitter. It’s long hair and lip-liner. It’s butterfly tattoos and belly shirts. It’s totally 90’s.

Do you like this song?

I did! I think the lyrics have some things to explore, especially in light of the mental issues that we now know Carey would later face in her life. I also think the vocalizations she uses in this song are a great combination of Ace of Base intervals with a sort of evolved Michael Jackson flavor. Neato.

Which part of your life might have this song as a soundtrack?

I think this song is perfect for an evening of self-pampering, especially following a really difficult day.
